Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School
Countryside outside of Xi'an, China

Completion Report (PDF 1 MB)

The Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School is located about an hour from the city center of Xi’an, in the ShaanXi Province.

There are over 300 students in grades 1-6 that attend the Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School.  This school is one of five elementary schools in the area that The Library Project will be providing libraries to.

The Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School is a Focus Schools, which is a school that will be experiencing an increase in attendance because of school consolidations and closures in the area. It is estimated that the attendance will jump to well over 500 students in the next two years. This will be the first Focus School in the area to experience the jump in attendance. To accommodate for this jump in student numbers they have just finished construction of a new school building. They just broke ground on dormitories for an estimated one hundred children that live a great distance from the school.

The Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School has an incredible group of teachers and administrators. We all love going to this school because we always receive bags of fresh fruit from Ms. Zhong, the third grade teacher.

A short video of the library at Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School

The Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School suffered from another fact: that the school library was in a small room the size of a walk in closet. The good news is that they had a large room set aside for a proper library, they just lacked the funds to provide the needed tables and chairs. Along with having no tables and chairs for the library, the school had only about 100 school books that the children could physically read. Most of their books were written for university and high school students. This made their current library almost unusable.

The Library Project transformed the empty library room at Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School with a donation of four sturdy wooden tables and seating for thirty children. Along with providing a globe, posters and plants, The Library Project also upgraded their collection of books with 500 hi-quality children's books in the Chinese language.

The Library Project made a clear IMPACT in the quality of education that the administration are able to provide for the children that attend Bai Lu Yuan Elementary School. This impact will be seen for year to come through the use of their library on a daily basis, but also through the positive impact that our volunteers made while donating the library. Games, arts and crafts, and introducing the administration to their new library are just a few ways that we were a positive impact on the lives of the children at Bai Lu Yuan.
