The Summer Camp - 1st of 15 library donations

The Library Project partnered with Sichuan Quake Relief, based out of Chengdu, to conduct Pre-Assessments of elementary schools in Baoxing County and to conduct a Summer Camp for children affected by the recent 2008 earthquake.

The Summer Camp was a huge success, because it got the books into the first elementary school in the region. It also gave The Library Project the opportunity to Pre-Assess 14 additional elementary schools in Baoxing County. Two months later The Library Project team returned to donate the remaining 14 libraries.

Crafts and games were played during the Summer Camp.

A Reading Corner was donated to Yan Nian Elementary School and is currently in a temporary school building. Their old school was damaged by the recent earthquake in 2008. The new school is being built next to it, and should be completed in 2010. Twenty-two students attend Yan Nian Elementary School.

The Elementary Schools

The schools that The Library Project work with in Baoxing County come in many different shapes and sizes. All 15 were affected in some way by the recent earthquake in 2008. We work with schools that are in different stages of development, both permanent schools and temporary schools. Below are a few photos of the kinds of schools we worked with this past Summer and Fall 2009 in Baoxing County.

Temporary elementary school (earthquake affected schools).

Permanent school.

Traveling to the schools

Paved roads, dirt roads, paths, steps, trucks, trains, planes, vans, taxis, cars, motorbikes and our two feet...you name it, we had to use it to get to the remote elementary schools.

Preparing the Reading Corners

Organizing over 3,750 Chinese language children's books is not easy, but is a critical step in any library donation. Once at the schools we get the students involved in the preparation of their new school library.

Stamping the children's books before putting them on the shelves.

Contracts (boring...)

Contracts are signed between The Library Project and the Principal of each school. The contract formalizes the hand-off of the library and states our expectations that the books should be used on a daily basis and allows us to return after six months to conduct a Post-Assessment.

Group photos!

The Library Project likes to get a group photo at our library donations. In general, we get the students to scream as loud as they can, then take the photo. What can we say? Kids like to be heard...
